For some entrepreneurs, it’s the thrill of the hunt that gets them going, making them feel capable and inspiring their investment in their small business. But although it may be somewhat of a generalization, those who go out looking for new business often fare worse than those who build the best core products and services and wait for business to come to them. This kind of idea, which really is contrary to some traditional ideas about initiative, ambition and success, has been expressed in such time-tested corporate motifs as the Heinz slogan “Good things come to those who wait,” but [...]

Recently, Entrepreneur.com talked about small business owner Jeffery Nash and used him as an example of taking your small business to the next level. Nash was the innovator of a baby walker that allows small children to remain close to their parents in crowds, and wanted to take it to the international markets.
One thing he hadn’t counted on was the amount of interaction with government officials and regulations. In the case of Canada and South Africa, baby harnesses are banned, which meant that Nash would have to sell his product to officials in order to get permission to promote it [...]

If you’re a small business owner thinking about how many people it takes to do a particular job, consider some of the “background costs” involved an individual hiring. Some leaders who
don’t do the math end up spending much more than they should on inefficient labor strategies, partly because they may not factor in additional costs involved in hiring one additional staffer. Seasoned small business consultant Tim Berry, in a recent blog post on his Planning Startups Stories site, details some of the large expenses that pad an actual salary for a typical employee including:
• Vacation pay
• Health Benefits
• Workstations
• Other [...]

You know the old Rolling Stones song, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want?” It’s true. However, everyday there is someone in the world who pushes the proverbial envelope to get what they want (not necessarily what they need).
Take the story of Apotheosis. At five foot, six inches he was shorter than the average American male and very unhappy about it. Instead of accepting his fate, he chose to get costly, painful surgeries to add six inches to his height. He’s not alone in his quest. Others have chosen this limb-lengthening procedure for purely cosmetic reasons as well.
Sometimes what people [...]

We already see video, in the form of television and digital signage, in many different kinds of local businesses, but some small business leaders who haven’t really thought about how to integrate video might benefit from a closer look at how these types of installations really help the bottom line for a product or service business where customers visit a physical retail location or other business site. To some busy entrepreneurs, investing in a television or other digital display might seem like a waste of money, that is, until you stop to think about all of the potential benefits from [...]

Just saying the word franchise conjures up the idea of having a small business with built-in success handed to you. After all, you get an established brand name that millions of people already know about, and in many cases, get help with site selection, construction, and recruitment. All this, plus, you still get to feel like you’re in charge of your own business.
But owning a franchise takes the same amount of time, effort and (in some cases) money as a small business, but with different results. AllBusiness.com breaks down the basics of franchise-ownership to help de-bunk the myths and shed some [...]

“When you get to the end zone and score a touchdown, act like you’ve been there before.”
This quote, of uncertain origin, is a favorite of motivational speakers, and has been variously attributed to almost every famous football coach in gridiron history including Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Lou Holtz and Barry Switzer. Most often coaches used it as a rebuke to a showboating player who was displaying poor sportsmanship, but it was also meant to point out a desirable behavior. In sports, playing against a team that looks like they will score every time they have the ball can be intimidating.

There is an old saying that goes, “You will never make any money working for somebody else.” How true this statement is in a time such as now. Creating your own business can seem like a very tricky venture when you first begin to think about it.
